Cornwall Ave. speed limit reduced after driver crashed into girl

The intersection of Arbutus and Cornwall

Twenty-seven people per year are killed or injured in car crashes on Cornwall Avenue, Vancouver, including last summer’s horrific crash that critically injured a five-year-old girl. Vision Zero Vancouver helped draft a city council motion introduced by Councilor Boyle to reduce the speed limit along this street to 30km/h. Although council adopted the motion, the new speed limit was changed to 40km/h after an amendment by ABC. If a person is hit by a car going 30km/h the chance of survival is 90%. At 40km/h it is 60%. Although we applaud the progress, we are disappointed that ABC elected to amend the motion to this much deadlier speed with no justification.
