The summary for those who missed it:
Best of New West Transportation:
- Uptown Plaza: a new car-free public place for all! Years of community engagement to get it right.
- 6th Street: expanded sidewalks, slower cars, safer crossings, space for people
- 6th Street bike lanes: connections to retail, restaurants, and the high school. Put cyclists where stuff is. People shop, not cars
- Crosstown greenway: Years of iterative progress on the 7th Ave bike lane has resulted in a great product
Worst of New West Transportation:
- Large cars. Not a NW-specific problem! Two people killed in or near parking lots by oversized pickups in the past few years. No physical street intervention can prevent this. Fed gov’t needs to regulate vehicle size
- Herbert Spencer school zone: the chaos of pickup & drop-off time makes it unsafe for kids to walk, creating a vicious cycle of more & more parents driving. Hard to fix by simply improving the crossing at 6th and 2nd. Perhaps closing a block as a “school street” is the way forward.
- McBride: several fatal collisions in recent years. Drivers travelling way too quickly. As part of the “Major Road Network,” the Province controls it and NW can’t do much. The solution? Automated speed cameras, now!
